Maxwell NewYork welcomes attorney inquiries concerning psychological questions in criminal, civil, and immigration matters
Dr. Reed Maxwell is licensed in New York and board-certified in Clinical Psychology. His forensic experience includes work in state and federal matters, with referrals from public defenders, federal defense teams, and private counsel.
Competency & criminal case consultation
Assessment and consultation can address psychological or cognitive difficulties relevant to understanding proceedings, assisting counsel, and other functional questions.
Dr. Maxwell’s experience includes initial and independent competency evaluations, follow-up assessment, criminal mitigation, and examination of psychiatric, cognitive, memory, and substance-related factors. Each proposed New York assignment is reviewed for its specific requirements and suitability.
Psychological injury in civil matters
Evaluation and consultation can examine psychological symptoms, their effects on daily functioning, and their relationship to events under review.
Services may include direct assessment, review of treatment records and previous evaluations, and consideration of relevant history and alternative explanations. Dr. Maxwell has experience working with both plaintiff and defense counsel.
Immigration-related psychological hardship
Evaluations address psychological functioning and the anticipated effects of immigration-related family separation. Relevant personal history, family circumstances, symptoms, and daily functioning inform a written account of the psychological questions identified in the referral.
Complex diagnostic & cognitive questions
Personality-related difficulties, psychiatric symptoms, intellectual limitations, and neurodevelopmental concerns can complicate a legal matter.
Dr. Maxwell offers assessment and consultation to clarify these questions and examine their relevance to the assignment. Selected specialized risk-assessment referrals are considered following a review of the individual’s circumstances and the required methods.
Records review, reports & testimony
An engagement may involve review of prior psychological findings, consultation with counsel, a direct evaluation, report preparation, or expert testimony.
The assignment’s purpose, scope, methods, recipients, fees, and anticipated timing are established before work begins. Remote methods are used when appropriate; assignments requiring in-person evaluation or other arrangements are considered individually.
Dr. Maxwell provides independent opinions grounded in the available evidence. Findings may support or differ from a retaining party’s position. Fees are based on professional services, independent of the conclusions reached or the outcome of the matter.
Discuss a potential engagement
